Parliament Winter Session Day 1 Live Updates: Both Houses have been suspended for the day; Kharge accuses the government of undermining parliamentary decorum for 11 years.

Parliament's
Winter Session Day 1 Live Updates: Although the government has requested
support for a seamless session, it has only put forward an alternative
discussion regarding Vande Mataram and indicated that it will return to the SIR
issue later.
Amid
rising tensions, the Opposition has come together in calling for a discussion
on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, along with
addressing the recent blast in Delhi concerning national security, air
pollution, foreign policy, and more. Leaders from the Opposition have warned
that they will disrupt proceedings if the government does not arrange the
debate. While the government has requested cooperation for a smooth session, it
has only put forward an alternative discussion on Vande Mataram, stating it
will revisit the SIR issue later. The Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day
following slogans from opposition MPs on Monday.
Highlights
from the all-party meeting indicate that talks between both sides during
Sunday’s meeting and the following Business Advisory Committee (BAC) sessions
failed to resolve the impasse. The Opposition insists on discussions regarding
SIR, the recent Delhi blast, national security, air pollution, and foreign
policy, with some MPs indicating that they might not allow the House to
function if the SIR debate is blocked. The government argues that since SIR is
driven by the Election Commission, it cannot assume primary responsibility
while suggesting a broader discussion on electoral reforms.
The
government is poised to make a strong legislative advance, listing 14 Bills for
either introduction or consideration. Among these, key Bills include the Atomic
Energy Bill, 2025, which permits private involvement in the nuclear sector, and
the Higher Education Commission of India Bill, 2025, designed to overhaul
regulations in higher education. Other significant Bills involve amendments to
the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, the Jan Vishwas Act, the National Highways
Act, and GST legislation in Manipur. Meanwhile, opposition parties claim that
the Central government is hurrying through a short session to undermine
parliamentary traditions.
